We can’t all be surfers. We weren’t all raised in Newport Beach, just blocks from some of the best breaks in the world. Would that we were, but face it, we weren’t. If Mr. Zog’s sex wax sounds to you like a novelty gift rather than an aquatic necessity, well, at least you can still look good in a pair of board shorts that will fool the locals, thanks to Morgan Collett and Saturdays NYC. Mr. Collett was, in fact, raised on the California coast, but now he runs a surf shop in Manhattan and designs the Saturdays line for urban waveriders the world over.
The shop keeps New Yorkers fueled with La Colombe coffee and outfitted in gear for Long Island and New Jersey beaches. The clothes are beachwear that’s referential and classic without retro fetishism. Colorblocked board shorts. Well-cut tshirts with Saturday’s understated graphics--a seal or their signature backslash logo. Comfortable oxfords with a modern cut. And Saturdays’ stuff is priced so that you can maybe afford a trip to the left coast for a dip in the Pacific after all, even if your hometown is landlocked.
We’re looking forward to what Morgan Collett and Saturdays NYC have in store for fall 2011/2012: a basic and well-cut selection of wovens, knits, and outerwear custom-made for early autumn evenings by a moonlit bonfire on the sand. Look for trim, marled sweaters, plaid button-downs and solid overshirts, as well as cotton trousers, available in a downtown palette of grays, olives, and blacks with some fall color for pop.
