Small batch production is the way to make distinctive things. Make too much of anything and it will end up watered-down. This idea works for bourbon, but also, it turns out, for quality technical outerwear. Crescent Down Works was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1974, during an explosion in advancements in fabrics and fabrication in outdoor sportswear. In other words, when we were making a lot of cool stuff. Over the decades since, there's been little to improve about down-filled technical clothing. It's still warm as hell, lightweight, and looks like it means business... assuming your business is being comfortable when the weather is unfriendly.
Crescent Down Works' style is directly inspired by the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It's a cliche to say it rains a lot there, but that doesn't make it less true. It's also cold in the mountains, and there's mountains all over. White-topped Mount Rainier dominates the Seattle skyline, its snowfields and glaciers 60 miles from the city. When you're on the trail, a down vest from Crescent might be the perfect accessory, keeping your core warm (and stylish) while leaving your arms free to help yourself up rock scrambles. If the temperature goes down a few more degrees you may need to up the ante with a down sweater, a unique shirt-cut down jacket that pads your upper half with goose down. To keep you dry, Crescent uses traditional 60/40 blends to shed rain. To keep your gear together, they use ripstop fabrics and leather-reinforced buttons for toughness and durability.
Crescent Down Works sews all their pieces in a small factory in Seattle. In an actual neighborhood, no less. Rather than produce as much as they can and hope it works out, they cut each piece to order. Like a small batch bourbon carefully distilled and aged in charred oak barrels, that's the right way to do it.
